Start of Ramadan 2019

The beginning of Ramadan has traditionally been based on “hilal” sightings, which is the traditional method mentioned in the Quran and followed by the Prophet Muhammad.

A new month in the Islamic Calendar begins with sighting of moon on 29th of the prevailing month. If the new moon, Crescent, is sighted, the next day is counted as first day of the new month. If not, the next day is counted as 30th day of the prevailing month and the new month begins a day later.

Accordingly, if the moon is sighted today i.e. Sunday May 05, 2019 the holy fasting month of Ramadan in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries will begin on Monday May 06, 2019. If the new moon is not sighted today, then the holy month in these countries will begin from Tuesday May 07, 2019.

The first day of Ramadan 2019 in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and other Gulf States is Monday May 06, 2019. The decision in these countries was taken Saturday after the Saudi Supreme Court and moon sighting committees and religious affairs ministry in other Arab states did not receive any moon sighting report.

In Australia, the Grand Mufti of the country, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad and the Australian National Imams Council declared May 6 as the first day of Ramadan. According to a statement released by the Australia National Imams Council, the decision has been taken after extensive consultations with Islamic leaders across Australia.

In New Zealand, Federation of Islamic Associations (FIANZ) has issued ab appeal to sight the moon on Monday May 06, 2019 - corresponding to 29th of Shaban in New Zealand.

On the other hand, Muslims in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and other European countries will also decide today when Ramadan 2019 begins in these countries. Some of these countries rely on moon sighting announcements by Saudi Supreme Court, and begin fasting of Ramadan with Arab States.

Fasting in Ramadan

More than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world will mark the month, during which believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having martial relations from dawn until sunset. They also try to avoid evil thoughts and deeds during the holy month. Ramadan is sacred to Muslims because tradition says the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) during that month. It is followed by the Eid al-Fitr festival.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five obligatory pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, annual charity -- known as "zakat" -- and performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah.

Meanwhile, special preparations are also on in the Muslim world for Salate Taraveeh – the special night prayers offered in the month of Ramadan besides daily prayers five times in a day. Muslims around the world are making special arrangements for Iftar – the meal to break the fast, so that poor Muslims don’t suffer.
