Azim Premji Donation for Coronavirus

Bengaluru: The Azim Premji Foundation has donated Rs 1,125 crore for a comprehensive on the ground response to contain the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, an official said on Wednesday.

"Modern global society has not confronted a crisis of this magnitude and type and all must work together to not only deal with this crisis and minimize its human impact, particularly on the disadvantaged," said Azim Premji Foundation's spokesperson in a statement.

The foundation's 1,600-member team will coordinate with the government institutions in collaboration with the 350 member strong civil society partners to put the funds to good use.

The announcement came amid the viral news in the media and social networking sites since last week claimed that Azim Premji has announced 50,000 donation to fight coronavirus.

Tech giant Wipro later clarified that the news reports and social media posts of Founder Azim Premji donating Rs 50,000 crore are misleading as the charitable contribution was made in March 2019 when Premji, the then chairman of Wipro had announced to earmark 34 percent of his shares worth Rs 52,750 crore to an endowment under the Azim Premji Foundation.

Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani had earlier committed Rs. 500 crore whereas Gautam Adani had donated Rs. 100 crore to fight Coronavirus.

On the other hand, Ratan Tata announced a donation of Rs 500 cr to tackle Coronavirus. Following Ratan Tata’s announcement, N. Chandrasekharan, chairman of Tata Sons announced an additional Rs 1,000 crore in support towards COVID-19 and related activities.

Actress Anushka Sharma and her cricketer-husband Virat Kohli have also pledged their support to the PM CARES fund - formed to tackle Coronavirus.

Among others filmmaker Karan Johar, actor Sonam Kapoor, Ayushman Khurrana and few others also pledged support but did not say how much they were donating, Sachin Tendulkar donated Rs 25 lakh each to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra's Relief Fund and Cricketer Suresh Raina donated Rs 31 lakh to PM-CARES Fund and Rs 21 lakh to UP CM's Disaster Relief Fund to combat coronavirus.
