Kerman (Iran): A stampede erupted on Tuesday at a funeral procession for a top Iranian general killed in a US airstrike last week, killing 40 people and injuring 213 others, state television reported.
According to the report, the stampede took place in Kerman, the hometown of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, as the procession got underway. Initial videos posted online showed people lying lifeless on a road, others shouting and trying to give help them.
"So far 40 people were killed and 213 others were wounded in the incident," the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Tuesday, citing an emergency services official.
Iranian General Qassem Soleimani was killed in US airstrike Friday. The missile that killed Soleimani and five others was fired from US Military and Air base located in Qatar.
Reports said hundreds of thousands of people had gathered in the small city of Kerman for the burial of Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, who was responisble for the murder and killing of thousands in Iraq and Syria.
Soleimani's funeral was postponed after the stampede, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported, without providing more details.
