Aligarh: A day after Minister of Human Resources Development (MHRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) said there are serious discrepancies in the data that affected the university's ranking.
"A serious discrepancy in terms of PhD output has adversely affected Aligarh Muslim University's ranking announced by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020", one of leading university in India said.
"The university has 2911 full-time research scholars while it is mentioned just 33. This needs immediate rectification" said Professor Salim Beg, Chairman, Ranking Committee.
"Out of five parameters, we have scored well in four of them", he said.
"However, we have gone down in the parameter of 'Graduation Outcome' (GO) as they (NIRF) have fed wrong data related to the number of PhD completed in AMU in the last session and because of this, our overall score has gone down", he added.
"The University will file representation in MHRD/NIRF at the earliest for rectification", he added.
The data as uploaded by AMU is available on the university website wherein it is specified that the number of full time "PhD students who graduated" year wise are as follows:
2016-17: 387 2017-18: 312 2018-19: 363
2016-17: 387
2017-18: 312
2018-19: 363
However in the NIRF data the corresponding figures for the University are reflected as:
2016-17: 8 2017-18: 10 2018-19: 8
2016-17: 8
2017-18: 10
2018-19: 8
"Similarly the number of students pursuing PhD on full-time are shown as 33 while the actual data is 2911", the university said.
"It seems that the computation on wrong data has adversely affected the NIRF rank of the University and needs redressal", the AMU said.
As per the NIRF Rankings 2020 released Thursday, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) dropped to 31st rank scoring 52.54 points this year.
Interestingly, only a day before the AMU was placed at 31st spot in India by QS World University Rankings 2021 released Wednesday. This is an improvement as the AMU was placed at 33rd spot by QS World Rankings in 2020.
Similarly, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), celebrating its centenary year, saw significant jump in Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings that placed the university at the 2nd position among Indian universities in the Physical Sciences category, excluding the premier Indian technology institutes.
Physical Sciences in AMU scored 50.7 in the citation category and 11.7 in research category.
