Mumbai/Jeddah: In a move which is bound to upset India, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Wednesday called Jammu and Kashmir a "disputed territory" and also said India's "unilateral actions" in the earstwhile state is unacceptable.
"The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been following with deep concern the unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 and subsequent measures to alter the demographics of Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir", the OIC said in a statement.
"It undermine the rights of the people in the region, a disputed territory as per the relevant UN Security Council resolutions", the OIC said.
The OIC was referring to the Modi Government's decision to scrap the Special Status granted to Jammu and Kashmir. A subsequent bill was passed by the Parliament on August 5, 2019.
On Monday, the Modi government had introduced Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Adaptation of State Laws) Order, 2020 and Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure) Rules 2020 that are being opposed by National Conference and other opposition parties.
"The OIC General Secretariat reaffirmed the importance of complying with international law and UN Security Council resolutions, considering the recent notification of ‘Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure) Rules 2020’ as baseless, running counter to international law and UN Security Council resolution 122", the statement said.
Recalling the resolutions of the Islamic Summit and the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) on Jammu and Kashmir, the General Secretariat reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The OIC also called on the international community to gear up its efforts to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, according OIC news portal UNA-OIC.
India considers Jammu and Kashmir undisputed and fully under its control territory. It also regards all its matters internal and don't want any external interference in Kashmir.
