New Delhi: Making the 2024 Parliamentary Election battle in North East Delhi seat interesting, the Congress party has fielded former JNUSU President and the party’s firebrand leader Kanhaiya Kumar to take on BJP's Manoj Tiwari in the high profile seat of the national capital.
Kanhaiya Kumar came to the limelight when he was arrested along with other JNU student leaders, including Omar Khalid, in 2016 on charges of sedition.
Kanhaiya Kumar was then JNU Student Union’s President. He later formally joined CPI (M) and contested the 2019 General Elections from Begusarai in Bihar. Kanhaiya ran a high profile campaign on poll debut but lost the election to Giriraj Singh of the BJP because of the huge polarisation of votes.
After the loss in 2019 Parliament Elections, Kanhaiya Kumar joined Congress and was in the front rows when Rahul Gandhi walked the length and breadth of the country for the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. His efforts bore fruits when he has been nominated by the party to take on Manoj Tiwari of the BJP in the North East Delhi Parliamentary Constituency.
North East Delhi Parliamentary Constituency
North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat once represented by former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit used to be Congress bastion. But ever since the Modi wave in 2014, the seat is represented by Manoj Tiwari.
Manoj Tiwari is a Bhojpuri film actor and singer. He started his political career with the Samajwadi Party (SP). In the 2009 Parliamentary Elections, he had unsuccessfully contested from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh against now UP CM Adityanath.
Tiwari later shifted his loyalty to the BJP and won the 2014 and 2019 General Elections from the North East Delhi seat. Coming in the midst of the Modi wave, Tiwari’s victory in both the elections is also credited to a huge division of votes between the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and other non-BJP parties.
Delhi North East seat is comprised of 10 Vidhan Sabha segments of Delhi NCR – 07 held by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and 03 by the BJP.
Kanhaiya Kumar has a fair chance of denying Manoj Tiwari a third term in the Parliament as the Congress and AAP are fighting the 2024 General Election in alliance.
Polling in North East Delhi will be held in the 6th Phase of 7-Phase India elections on May 25, 2024. The counting of votes and announcement of results will be on June 04, 2024.
