London: In a claim that may sound bizarre to some, a UK Parliamentary Committee blamed ‘Mr Bean’ actor Rowan Atkinson for poor sales of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Britain.
The famous actor was name-checked in the House of Lords, the Upper House of the UK Parliament, during its Environment and Climate Change Committee meeting Tuesday February 06, 2024.
During the meeting, Green Alliance, a think-tank, termed an article written by Rowan Atkinson as the most damaging for Britain’s push to EV adoption and UK plans to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2035.
The article referred to by the committee was published by The Guardian in June 2023.
"One of the most damaging articles was a comment piece written by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian which has been roundly debunked," Sky News reported quoting the observation made during the committee’s meeting.
"Unfortunately, fact checks never reach the same breadth of audience as the original false claim, emphasising the need to ensure high editorial standards around the net zero transition", Green Alliance reportedly told during the meeting.
In the article titled “I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped,” he wrote that EVs were “a bit soulless” and criticised the use of their lithium-ion batteries.
Rowan Atkinson has degrees in Electrical Engineering and Control Systems.
