Ashok Chavan had resigned from the Primary Membership of the Congress yesterday.
Ashok Chavan joined the BJP in the presence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the party headquarters in Mumbai.

Ashok Chavan was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 8, 2008, to November 9, 2010. On November 9, 2010, the Congress Party asked him to resign from office over corruption allegations relating to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

Ashok Chavan also served as MPCC president. He was the Vice President and General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress Committee from 1986 to 1995.

He was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for three terms, starting in 1999 and ending in May 2014. He was a member of Lok Sabha from 1987 to 1989 and was re-elected to the lower house of the Parliament in May 2014.

"A matter of anguish"

Chavan’s departure comes days after Baba Siddiqui, Milind Deora and some other Congress leaders too resigned the party.

Commenting on the resignation of Ashok Chavan from the party, Congress General Secretary had said the party had given much more than they deserved and their resignations from the party is a "matter of anguish".

"When friends and colleagues leave a political party that has given them much — perhaps much more they deserved — it is always a matter of anguish. But to those who are vulnerable, THAT Washing Machine will always prove more attractive than ideological commitment or personal loyalties", he wrote on X, originally launched as Twitter.

"These betrayers don't realise that their exit opens up vast new opportunities to those whose growth they have always stunted", he added.

Meanwhile, Ashok Chavan on his way to the BJP headquarters in Mumbai Tuesday said he is starting a "new political journey" from today.
