Delhi Chalo: Massive Jam as Farmers March to National Capital

New Delhi: Hundreds of thousands of farmers onboard trucks, tractors, trollies and other vehicles are marching toward the National Capital, New Delhi, as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo March’ or ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation protesting against the Modi government’s ‘betrayal’.

All roads leading to Delhi are witnessing a huge traffic because of the farmers protest and consequent blockade of key border points connecting Delhi.

The government officials led by Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Arjun Munda held a series of talks with farmers’ leaders without any result.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced to go ahead with the Delhi Chalo March after the talks with the government failed.

Earlier, the administer had blocked all the roads leading to the National Capital Delhi, deploying battalions of police and paramilitary personnel equipped with anti-riot gears, multiple layers of barricades, concrete blocks, iron nails and walls of containers have been put up at three border points - Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur.

The local administration in Haryana were also seen warning using microphones the farmers against marching to the National Capital and participating in Dilli Chalo March. Despite the crackdown and blockade farmers are marching towards Delhi.

Meanwhile, AAP government in Delhi has refused to convert Bawana Stadium into a temporary jail.

The farmers announced Delhi March on February 13, 2024 alleging that the government betrayed them and did not fulfil the promises believing which they had ended their 378-day long protest in December 2021.

"We waited for two years for the government to fulfil the promises which PM Modi himself had made to us. We decided to march again after we did not get any positive response from the government", Sarwan Singh Pandher told media.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda told media that there was unanimity on various points but on some points decision was supposed to be taken after forming a committee.

"We are ready for further talks with farmers", he said.

The 'Delhi Chalo' march which has been supported by more than 200 farmers' unions across the country is aimed at pressing the Centre to address their various demands, including the enactment of a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
