OIC 'denounces' opening of Ram Temple on Babri Masjid site

Jeddah: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed concerns and denounced the opening of Ram temple on the site where Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished on December 06, 1992.

“The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed grave worry over the recent construction and inauguration of the "Ram Temple" at the site of the previously demolished Babri Mosque located in the Indian city of Ayodhya”, the 57-member representative body of the Muslim countries said in a statement released Tuesday January 23, 2024.

“In line with the OIC position expressed by the Council of Foreign Ministers in its previous sessions, the General Secretariat denounces these actions aimed at obliterating the Islamic landmarks represented by the Babri Mosque, which has stood tall in the exact location for five centuries”, the OIC said.

The OIC statement came a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a controversial ceremony inaugurated Ram temple in Ayodhya after “pran pratishtha” or consecration ceremony.

Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was built following a Supreme Court order in Nov 2019 pronounced after a long legal battle.

Surprisingly, the Supreme Court of India ordered the construction of Ram temple on the land on which Babri Masjid, built in 1528 and standing there till December 1992, despite asserting in its order that there was no evidence to prove the mosque was built after demolishing any temple.

The Supreme Court in its order also said that the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 06, 1992 was "illegal and violation of the rule of law".

"Damage to the mosque in 1934, its desecration in 1949 leading to ouster of the Muslims and its eventual destruction on December 6, 1992, constituted a serious violation of the rule of law", the SC said in its verdict.

The inaugural event organisers had sent invitation to top Hindu priests and leaders of the key opposition parties besides others.

While top Hindu seers, including 04 Shankar Acharyas, declined the invitation to attend the inaugural ceremony citing violations of Hindu religious principles and guidelines, opposition leaders refused to attend the ceremony terming it a “political event” organised by the BJP and its ideological mentor RSS.

In a veiled reference to the inauguration of Ram Mandir, Abhishek Banerjee, Member of Parliament and National General Secretary, All India Trinamool Congress, wrote on social media X:

"My RELIGION has not taught me to accept and embrace a place of worship, whether it be a MANDIR, MASJID, CHURCH or GURUDWARA, which has been built over HATRED, VIOLENCE and the dead bodies of innocents. Period!"

The BJP has rejected all these allegations.
