‘Silent Strength’: Deaf join pro-Palestine March in Australia; Demand ceasefire in Gaza

Sydney/Melbourne: In a heart-touching gesture to express their solidarity with the Palestinians, a large number of people who are deaf Sunday January 21, 2024 joined a mass protest in Australia’s Sydney demanding immediate ceasefire in Gaza Strip.

“Being there in your own quiet, but being there at your loudest! Heart-touching scenes showing deaf community taking part in a mass protest in Australia to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza”, Palestine Online wrote on social media platform X in their appreciation.

"I've never seen this in my lifetime for a peaceful demonstration. Awesome", Declan Sweeney, an Irish who is a Project Manager (Construction) reacted on the video.

"That made me cry. Perhaps that's how I feel even with a voice, still not heard", another social media user commented after watching the viral video.

“No words can truly capture the power and resilience of those who find strength in their silence and speak volumes through their actions. These heart-touching scenes remind us of the importance of standing up for what we believe in, even when the world seems too loud to hear. #SilentStrength”, Crypto Signals which uses X handle @CryptoSignalsU wrote.

The pro-Palestinian rally in Sydney’s Hyde Park was 15th in the city since October 7, 2023 when the Zionist regime in Israel ordered relentless bombing of Gaza and also tightened the blockade of the enclave besieged since 2006.

The protesters participated in the anti-Israeli rally Sunday despite scorching heat and when Sydney was sizzling at 34C.

“If you want the killing to end, demand the killers to stop their bombing,” Damian Ridgwell, one of the organisers of the rally said, calling on the Australian government to “unconditionally come out and demand Israel cease the killing”.

“It is totally inadequate to make out as if this is a conflict between two equal sides. Stop calling it self-defence, it is a genocide that is happening in Gaza”, The Guardian quoted his as saying.

Nick Teane, who attended Sunday’s rally and lives in Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s seat of Grayndler, said if he could say one thing to him it would be:

“Stand up for your principles.”

The protesters also asked the Australian government to extend its support to the South Africa case at the International Court of Justice. More than 100 countries have already extended their support for the South African petition which has accused Israel of committing Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza Strip.

Port of Melbourne blocked

Demanding ceasefire and end of Israeli massacre of Palestinians in Gaza, around 4,000 pro-Palestine protesters in Melbourne Sunday blocked a major freight terminal.

The blockade at the Port of Melbourne started on Friday and has prevented an Israeli-owned ship from being unloaded. It resulted in four cargo ships being stranded along with 30,000 containers, according to the Middle East Eye.

Mohammed Helmy, one of the protest organisers, told the news portal that the protest and blockade have been effective so far and is intended to pressure the government to take action on the atrocities unfolding in Gaza as a result of Israeli aggression.

"The action has completely blocked the port at the moment to send a strong message to the government that Melbournians are not happy with Zim ships being loaded from the Melbourne port," he said.

Gaza death toll crosses 25,000 mark

Meanwhile, the Israeli Occupation Forces are continuing the massacre of Palestinians and destruction of Khan Younis and other civilian areas in Gaza. The relentless bombardment of the Israeli forces have as on January 23, 2024 killed at least 25,490 Palestinians and have also left over 7,000 others missing who are presumed dead, according to the Health Ministry of Palestine.

As per the latest update from Gaza, Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza has been seized by the Israeli Occupation Army. This is in continuation of the Israeli war on hospitals.

According to the UN, there were at least 212 Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities and workers in Gaza from October 7 to December 11.

Amnesty International meanwhile has written a letter directed to the EU’s Josep Borrell and the EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs, urging the body to call for an immediate ceasefire and to apply public pressure on Israel to immediately lift its illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip.

“We are horrified by the magnitude of the man-made human rights and humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” the letter said.

“We share the view of 153 states and majority of UN bodies that a ceasefire is the only way to save lives, address the humanitarian crisis and facilitate the return of civilian hostages currently held in the Gaza Strip", the Amnesty said.
