UK Election 2024 Results Live: Keir Starmer of Labour Party officially became new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

He became the new UK PM after an audience with King Charles at Buckingham Palace and visiting 10 Downing Street, the BBC reports.

Keir Starmer met the King for the formal invitation to form a government.

The Labour party has won a total of 412 seats - up 211 seats from its last tally.

The Conservative party, which ruled the country for the last 14 years, won 121 seats in the 2024 UK parliament polls - 250 less than the 2019.

As the counting of votes reached its final stages Friday morning, Labour party had doubled its strength in the last parliament winning 407 of the total 650 seats.

Rishi Sunak led Conservative party could win 112 seats – down 243 seats as compared to the party’s last tally.

"We did it"

"We did it. Thank you truly... you have changed our country", a beaming Keir Starmer, who led the Labour party to the landslide win, said in his victory speech.

"The change has begun", he said.

"Four-and-a-half years of work changing this party... This is what it is for. A changed Labour... Ready to restore Britain to the service of the working people", he added.

Starmer - who is all set to be sworn in as Prime Minister - won his Holborn and St Pancras seat in despite a sharply reduced majority - from nearly 23,000 votes in 2019 to fewer than 12,000 this time.

Rishi Sunak concedes defeat

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak conceded defeat.

"I am sorry... I take responsibility for the loss," Sunak said.

The United Kingdom comprising of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland has a total of 650 constituencies represented by as many Member of Parliaments.

The country has a total of 49 million registered voters who were asked to vote on Thursday July 04, 2024 from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Polling in the United Kingdom was held using paper ballots.

This elections, close to 1 million Hindus and around 4 million Muslims are also seeking to assert their political importance.

As compared to the last elections, the Muslims this time were more organised. The Muslim Vote, a campaign launched ahead of the elections, had also released a list of constituencies having more than 10% votes along with the names of preferred candidates.

There were a total of 19 Muslim MPs in 2019 – 04 more than their tally in 2017. In the 2024 elections, however, number of Muslim MPs is likely to go up.

A record number of Muslims, 300, are contesting the 2024 parliament elections in UK. Of them at least 28 have a good chance to win, according to projections.
