Wimbledon 2024: World No 2 Novak Djokovic Monday stormed into Wimbledon Quarter Finals, convincingly defeating Holger Rune in three straight sets with the scoreboard screaming 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
The Serbian tennis star will play his 60th Grand Slam Quarter Finals, and his 15th at Wimbledon, when he will face 9th seed Alex de Minaur on July 10, 2024.
Djokovic, a 7-time Wimbledon champion, was anticipated to face a tough challenge from Rune. However, he delivered a commanding performance, securing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory in just over two hours.
Despite wearing a knee support following recent surgery, the 37-year-old dominated the match from the outset, not conceding a single point in the first three games against his overwhelmed opponent.
Djokovic dedicated his victory to daughter, Tara, who was sitting on the stands. Tara, has been learning to play violin, and the Serbian celebrated the victory Monday, holding his racket high like violin as Tara clapped.
However, more than his convincing victory over Rune, Djokovic’s post-match interview is making the news.
The Serbian tennis star’s hot and cold relationship with Wimbledon crowd took another turn Monday when he in the post-match interview accused the audience of “disrespecting” him during the match.
It all started when the Centre Court audience continuously chanted for Rune, which the Serbia tennis player alleged, was a “deliberate attempt to distract him”.
While slamming, what he felt was the “unruly crowd”, Djokovic mocked them with a long “Good Night” in reply to their repeated and elongated cries of 'Ruuuuuuu-ne'.
"To all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a goooooood night! Goooooood night! Goooooood night!" Djokovic said in what is seen as a tit-for-tat rebuttal of the Wimbledon crowd.
With the interviewer suspecting that Djokovic might have misheard the chants as Rune for boos, the 24-time Grand Slam winner stated that he knows all the tricks and has played in more belligerent atmosphere than this.
"I don't accept that, no, no, no. I know there they were cheering for Rune but that's an excuse to also boo. Listen, I've been on the tour for more than 20 years. So trust me, I know all the tricks”, he said.
“I know how it works. It's fine. It's fine. I focus on respectful people that have respect that paid the ticket to come and watch tonight and love tennis and appreciate the players and the effort they put in”, he added.
“I have played in much more hostile environments. Trust me, you guys, you guys can't touch me”, he said.
Novak Djokovic played the Wimbledon Men's Singles Finals in 2023, but lost the match to Carlos Alcaraz.
