Riyadh: In another decision which could spark a controversy in the Islamic World, Saudi Arabia has confirmed to participate in the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant 2024.
Saudi Arabia, known for adhering to strict Islamic Principles, has confirmed local model Rumy Alqahtani will participate in the Miss Universe Beauty Contest slated to be held in Mexico in September this year.
In an Instagram post on Monday, 27-year-old model Rumy Alqahtani also announced her participation as Saudi Arabia's debutante in the international beauty pageant billed as an vent which 'commercializes women and spread vulgarity'.
“Honored to participate in Miss Universe 2024", al-Qahtani wrote on Instagram in Arabic language.
“This is the first participation of Saudi Arabia in the Miss Universe competition,” she added, posing with the Saudi flag and a sash that reads “Miss Universe Saudi Arabia.”
Saudi National Flag features in white an Arabic inscription written in the calligraphic Thuluth script and a sword. The inscription is the Islamic creed or shahada:
“There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
Rumy had earlier represented Saudi Arabia in a number of other events including Miss Arab Peace, Miss Planet, Miss Middle East, and more, according to Al Arabiya English.
Rumy had also participated in the Miss and Mrs Global Asian held in Malaysia a few weeks ago. Besides being crowned Miss Saudi Arabia, she holds the titles of Miss Middle East (Saudi Arabia), Miss Arab World Peace 2021, and Miss Woman (Saudi Arabia), according to The Khaleej Times.
She said she is promoting "Saudi culture and heritage" by participating in these contests.
"My contributions are to learn about world cultures and to transfer our authentic Saudi culture and heritage to the world," said Rumy Alqahtani as reported by Arab News.
