Mumbai:
The Samajwadi Party (SP) today declared Farhan Azmi, son of the
party's Maharashtra state president and sitting MLA Abu Azmi as its
candidate for the January 20 by-election to Bhiwandi (East)
Legislative Assembly seat.
Confirming this to
UNI here, Abu Azmi said his son will file his nomination papers
tomorrow. The Left parties and other constituents of the Republican
Left Democratic Front (RLDF), that was cobbled together before the
recent Assembly elections, are supporting the SP in this
by-election, he claimed.
Farhan Azmi runs a
popular
restaurant
in south Mumbai and is married to Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia. It
will be his first election.
Sons and daughters
of many politicians in Maharashtra, including the Shiv Sena supremo,
Bal Thackeray, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and
Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and former Chief ministers
of Congress, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Narayan Rane
have already joined politics.
The by-election was
caused due to resignation of Abu Azmi from this seat in Thane
district after he retained another seat of Mankhurd-Shivajinagar in
Mumbai suburban district from which he had also won in the Assembly
elections in October this year. No candidate from any major party
has filed nomination for the by-election so far.
According to
political sources, the Congress is is likely to put up its sitting
member of the legislative council, Muzaffar Hussain and the
opposition Shiv Sena may field its former MLA Yogesh Patil for this
bye-election.
The last date of
filing nominations is January 2. The scrutiny will take place on
January 4 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is January
6. Polling will be conducted by
electronic
voting machine on January 20.
Counting of votes is
scheduled on January 23 and the result is expected to be announced
the same day.
