Mumbai: The Samajwadi Party (SP) today declared Farhan Azmi, son of the party's Maharashtra state president and sitting MLA Abu Azmi as its candidate for the January 20 by-election to Bhiwandi (East) Legislative Assembly seat.

Confirming this to UNI here, Abu Azmi said his son will file his nomination papers tomorrow. The Left parties and other constituents of the Republican Left Democratic Front (RLDF), that was cobbled together before the recent Assembly elections, are supporting the SP in this by-election, he claimed.

Farhan Azmi runs a popular restaurant in south Mumbai and is married to Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia. It will be his first election.

Sons and daughters of many politicians in Maharashtra, including the Shiv Sena supremo, Bal Thackeray, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and former Chief ministers of Congress, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Narayan Rane have already joined politics.

The by-election was caused due to resignation of Abu Azmi from this seat in Thane district after he retained another seat of Mankhurd-Shivajinagar in Mumbai suburban district from which he had also won in the Assembly elections in October this year. No candidate from any major party has filed nomination for the by-election so far.

According to political sources, the Congress is is likely to put up its sitting member of the legislative council, Muzaffar Hussain and the opposition Shiv Sena may field its former MLA Yogesh Patil for this bye-election.

The last date of filing nominations is January 2. The scrutiny will take place on January 4 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is January 6. Polling will be conducted by electronic voting machine on January 20.

Counting of votes is scheduled on January 23 and the result is expected to be announced the same day.
