Mumbai:
Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla today said the election
schedule for the Assembly polls in
Maharashtra will be announced any time after
finalisation of the electoral rolls, which will be completed by
August 22.
Chawla was talking to reporters at a press conference held at
Sahyadri Guest house here. He was in the city along with EC S Y
Qureshi, EC V S Sampath and Deputy Election Commissioner J P Prakash.
They
held a series of meetings with the state and national level
political parties, apart from the six Divisional Commissioners and
the District Collectors of Mumbai, Thane and
Pune.
State Electoral Officer Debashish Chakravarty, Director General of
Police S S Virk were also present during the press conference.
Chawla said the parties gave some suggestions but nobody demanded
postponement of the elections due to swine flu.
Clarifying that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in use were
tamper-proof, the EC said the machines that were shown to be
tampered by some politicians and independent groups were not the
machines used by the Commission and added that when the Commission
asked them to prove their claims about the machines, nobody came
forward. ''They were either unwilling or unable to demonstrate that
machine can be tampered,'' he informed.
Chawla said the
Commission had received many complaints about 'silent support' by
presiding officials to the Congress and NCP and pointed that the EC
will take all measures to avoid such incidents.
He said the Commission will taken
strict action against hidden advertisements, money power and the
high-handed attitude of the police officials.
Asked whether there would be ban on
use of funds for any calamity or to start a new scheme to tackle the
drought-like situation, the EC clarified that there was no such ban.
