Cabinet clears Women's Reservation Bill

Govt. to bring Women Reservation Bill in Parliament next week

New Delhi: Lalu Prasda Yadav led RJD and Samajwadi Party today made its opposition to the Women's Reservation Bill plain after the Union Cabinet has given the green signal to the legislation.

''We will not tolerate it,'' an angry RJD Chief Lalu Prasad said in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address.

"The country's President is a woman, Lok Sabha Speaker is a woman, Congress president and UPA chairperson is also a woman and they have not come here through the women quota," he said.

"The nation has provided enough opportunities without reservation to women like Mayawati, Rabri Devi, Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Mamata Banerjee, among others", he added.

He was of the opinion that the Bill would kill the talent in the country and hence should not be brought in the House of the Elders at all.

He asked the Centre to convene an all-party meeting in this regard before taking any concrete action on it.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) too contended that there should be reservation for Muslim women and also women belonging to OBCs and added to say otherwise, it would vote against the Bill.

Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Uttar Pradesh state unit of SP said that they were firm with their decision of protesting, in case the amendments suggested by his party are not accepted and incorporated.

“In case backward class and Muslim women are not included in it (Women’s Reservation Bill), Samajwadi Party will oppose it and if the government is ready to accept the amendment, we will stand by its favour,” observed Akhilesh Yadav.

On February 25, Union Cabinet had approved the long-awaited Women’s Reservation Bill, which provides for 33 percent of reservation for women in the elected bodies.

The National Commission for Women, chairperson, Girija Vyas opined that the proposed Bill would not be an obstacle for anybody.

“By giving reservation to women, it will not affect their own domain. Rather we belong to half the population and we will carry forward the tradition of working together. Our percentage in the decision taking institutions reaches just up to six to eight percent whereas in other countries this percentage is much higher,” said Girija Vyas.
