Muslim reservation due to backwardness, not because of religion: Syed Shahabuddin

'Govt. should stop playing game with Muslims'

Hyderabad: "The glaring fact of Muslims backwardness & exclusion has lately been recognized by the government & the society. Sachar Committee findings have also substantiated the case. However, Muslims in India shall not wait for the government or any other agency to ameliorate their conditions", Dr. S.M. Ilyas Former Director NAARM said while addressing the valedictory session of a National Conference at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) on Exclusionary Perspectives for Muslims & Marginalized Groups.

"The initiative to come out from this vicious circle, has to be taken by themselves only", he stressed.

The conference that concluded yesterday was organized by the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy.

Stating that politicians or the so called Muslim sympathisers will not do anything for the community, Dr. Ilyas said, "Self help is the best way out. Globalization & economic reforms, have opened up a lot of opportunities. It is for us to grab them with both the hands."

Singling out the low level of literacy as the most basic problem of the Muslim Community, Dr. Ilyas said, "If somebody creates problems than it is his responsibility to provide the solution too."

At the same time he added, "Despite all the difficulties, there is a silver lining at the end of the tunnel. Our future is bright. There is no better country than India to live in & there is no better way of Government than Democracy."

Prof. B.K. Srivastava (N.Delhi) in his address said social exclusion is a modern & effective method to evaluate the problems of any particular community.

Pointing out the unavailability of reliable & credible research  data on the issues of Muslim backwardness & Exclusion, he urged the students from CSSEIP at MANUU to take up empirical study on the subject.

He also advised MANUU to translate teaching material of different subjects in Urdu.

Prof. Nancharayya in his address highlighted the plight of Dalits & other weaker sections.

"Muslims & marginalized communities shall be made strong enough so that they can avail the fruits of globalization. There is an urgent need to look at the plight of Muslims separately", he said.

During the 3-Day Conference, twelve Technical Sessions on different themes & two Symposiums were held. More than Hundred Papers were presented.
