Holi colours are symbolic of the diverse and multicultural society in India
New Delhi/Port-of-Spain: While People across the country are celebrating Holi today with enthusiasm and gaiety, Indians in Trinidad and Tobago celebrated the festival of colours rejoicing the performance of a folk dance troupe from Mathura and splashing coloured powder on each other’s face.
Holi colours are symbolic of the diverse and multicultural society in India.
The festival, which marks the onset of spring, brings together people from all classes and age groups as they play with colors distribute sweets and take out processions.
Eco-friendly colours are getting popularity in this ''Holi'' in place of toxic colours as these toxic colours and industrial dyes lead to severe skin allergies and eye problems.
The Holika Dahan or the lighting of bonfire on the eve of Holi took place on Sunday evening, on the eve of Dhulendi.
Meanwhile in Trinidad and Tobago, from early morning thousands of Hindus came out in their vehicles decorated with banners and flags to greet the community members on the occasion.
Performance by the artists of Charuka Dance Academy of Mathura, Uttar Prades, was one of the main attractions at the celebration hosted by Indian High Commissioner Malay Mishra.
Scores of Indian expatriates working here attended the function which was organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation, Caroni.
Winston Dookeran, leader of the Congress of the People (COP), in a message, said that Holi, also known as “Phagwa”, has become a national festival as it provides “a sense of spiritual empowerment and social mobility”.
“Phagwa has a message of hope, truth, humility and a spirit of humanitarianism for all mankind,” Dookeran said.
Satnarayan Maharaj, secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha(SDMS), said that Holi plays a vital role in the propagation of Indian culture across the world.
Holi is a festival of joy, mirth and buoyancy, and is celebrated when both man and nature cast off the winter gloom. Holi heralds the arrival of spring, the season of hope and new beginnings and marks the rekindling of the spirit of life.
