Malegaon Blast Accused Get a Respite
Cuddalore: Tension prevailed in this coastal district of Tamil Nadu since last night as an accident involving people of two villages broke into a communal clash, with one section setting ablaze at least seven huts and destroying properties.
Police said a wordy duel broke out between people of two villages of different communities. After the accident, about 150 people of Vazhisodanaipalayam village trooped into the village of other community and set ablaze at least seven huts, besides destroying two wheelers and other properties.
Tension mounted as the situation threatened to go out of hand, but timely action by the police averted a major clash between the two communities.
District Superintendent of Police Aswin Kotnis said 39 people has been arrested in connection with the arson and the situation has been brought under control.
More than 600 armed policemen, drawn from the strike force and local police, have been posted in the two villages and in other places, identified as communally sensitive, police said.
Trouble broke out when people of the two villages, travelling in two-wheelers met with an accident, two days ago. Both the parties lodged complaints with the Old Town Police here and the police closed the issue after working out a compromise.
However, two days after the incident, people of one village, in a fit of rage, trooped to Nayakkanatham village and indulged in arson and destroyed properties, police said.
