Reservation for Muslims unsustainable: Andhra High Court

Telugu Desam to implead itself in Muslim quota case

Hyderabad: Claiming that Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was very keen on implementation of four percent reservation to Muslims in education and employment sectors, Chief Minister K Rosaiah today exuded confidence that the Congress Government would be successful in its efforts to win the case in Supreme Court.

“There is no rethinking on the issue of implementation of four percent reservations to Muslim minorities.

The Congress party is committed for its implementation.

Sonia Gandhi told me that she, if necessary, will also intervene and speak to the people concerned on the issue,’’he added.

Addressing a Muslim minorities’ meeting organised by the Andhra Pradesh Congre s s Committee (APCC) at Prakasam hall in Gandhi Bhavan here today, the Chief Minister asserted that the Congress Government would not leave any stone unturned towards implementation of Muslim quota in the State.

APCC chief D Srinivas, who presided over the meeting, said that the ruling Congress would go `all out’ in its efforts towards implementation of Muslim reservations.

Earleir, the Telugu Desam party had decided to implead itself in the case filed by the State Government in the Supreme Court on 4 per cent reservation to Muslims.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held by party chief N Chandrababu Naidu with Muslim leaders in last week.

Naidu had also alleged that the Congress Government was hoodwinking the minorities and not allotting sufficient funds for their welfare.

“The nominal allocation earmarked for minorities in last year’s budget was not spent fully”, he said.

He alleged that the High Court quashed the reservation to Muslims because the government issued the orders in a hasty manner.

It was the failure of the government, he said.
