Mumbai: Basking on the glory of enjoying the second highest per capita income in the country, Maharashtra also enjoys the dubious distinction of being ranked third among States for having the largest number of people below the poverty line (BPL).
According to the State Economic Survey for 2009-10 presented in the State legislature on Monday, Maharashtra had a poverty ratio of 30.7 per cent as against the national ratio of 27.5 per cent and stood next only to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in terms of the highest number of people below poverty line in absolute terms. Tamil Nadu and West Bengal were in the same level as Maharashtra during 1993-94, but poverty ratios of the two states was much less in 2004-05.
In absolute terms, the population below poverty line increased to 1.22 million during the same period. The increase was mainly observed in urban areas.
According to the latest census on BPL families, the total number of BPL families in rural areas in 2002 was 4.50 million and that in urban areas 1.41 million.
The per capita income of 25 districts was below the state average with Latur, Gadchiroli and Washim having the lowest.
In contrast, the state boasted of a per capita income of Rs 54,867 in 2008-09 and stood second in the country after Haryana.
Mumbai and its suburban districts, Thane, Nashik, Pune and Nagpur districts contribute to 55 per cent of the state income which stood at Rs 3,81,541 crore in 2008-09.
