Gandhinagar:
The Gujarat High Court Monday granted bail to former Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) legislator Prahlad Gosa, an accused in the
killing of 11 Muslims during the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Mehsana
district.
The killing incident took place in Dipda Darwaja neighbourhood of
Visnagar town in Mehsana district.
Justice R.H. Shukla granted bail to Gosa while his plea was
opposed by the state government and the special investigation team
(SIT) set up at the behest of the Supreme Court.
Gosa, who was a BJP legislator in 2002, is facing charges of
instigating a mob.
In February this year, a special court set-up on the directive of
the apex court ordered that Gosa should be treated as an accused
in the Dipda Darwaja case.
The order was issued on the plea of the carnage's witness Mohamad
Iqbal Baloch. Gosa was sent to judicial custody Aug 3 following
his surrender.
The trial court of Sessions Judge B.N. Karya had issued the order
to charge Gosa as an accused in the case.
The fast track court order was challenged in higher courts by Gosa
but after rejection of his plea, Gosa surrendered.
