Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress
Committee, (MPCC), has welcomed the Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP),
ruled state Government's senior minister's statement eulogising
All India Congress Committee, (AICC), president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi
for her "spirit of sacrifice" in renouncing the Prime Minister's
chair following the Lok Sabha elections in 2004.
MPCC's Media Department chief Manak Agarwal in a Press release
hailed the Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister Babulal
Gaur's reported statement on Tuesday even though the BJP is
feeling shy to acknowledge Mrs. Gandhi feat of sacrifice.
Agarwal said that BJP and all constituents of the NDA are
squirming at the revelations made out by former President of India
APJ Abdul Kalamin his book 'Turning Points' that he
was ready to swear in Mrs. Sonia Gandhi as Prime Minister in 2004
without any hesitation despite intense political opposition from
some quarters on the issue of her foreign origin.
However, veteran state BJP leader and Minster Babulal Gaur,
who is also ex-Chief Minister of the state, has come forward
boldly to concede the magnanimity of Mrs. Gandhi of side-stepping
and recommending the name of Dr. Manmohan Singh for the Prime
Minister's post as revealed in Abdul Kalam's book, Agarwal
stated.
Agarwal hoped that the example put forward by Gaur's
acceptance of truth in acknowledging Mrs. Gandhi's "spirit of
sacrifice" would be emulated by other BJP leaders at the national
and state level to call spade a spade.
It may be pointed here that earlier in the day while interacting
with media persons the Madhya Pradesh minister Babulal Gaur
praised Congress chief Mrs. Sonia Gandhi for her "spirit of
sacrifice". in a statement that may not go down well with his
party BJP.
Gaur said: "At a time when people are ready to do anything for
power and post, Mrs. Sonia showed her spirit of sacrifice by
rejecting the PM's chair in 2004,"
Referring to the excerpts from the book, Gaur had said it
would have been better if Abdul Kalam had given a detailed
account of the manner in which Sonia Gandhi had renounced the
Prime Ministerial chair to make way for Dr. Manmohan Singh.
It may be recalled here that ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly
elections, Gaur had ruffled some feathers in BJP by his remark
that it would not come to power in the state and finish third or
fourth in the seats tally.
Meanwhile, Abdul Kalam's revelation had come in for scathing
criticism by JD(U) president and NDA convenor Sharad Yadav who
on Sunday hit out at the former President, saying his "conscience
has woken up late".
"His (Abdul Kalam’s) conscience has woken up late. It is for
self-aggrandisement. We used to respect him a lot but now are saddened after such comments," Yadav had said.
