Jerusalem: An Israeli Arab man and his Jewish bride are preparing to tie the knot despite threats made in Israel against their union by the anti-Arab organization Lehava to disrupt the wedding celebration planned for Sunday night in Rishon Letzion.
Sunday's event in Rishon Letzion, however, will only be a celebration; the wedding has already taken place according to Islamic custom, said Mahmoud, noting that Morel had converted to Islam.
The groom's parents and bride's mother support the marriage, but the bride's father does not, and has said he will not attend the celebration. Talking to Israel’s Channel 10 he said that he plans to boycott the wedding.
“I never dreamed that my daughter would marry an Arab,” he said. “I’m not going.”
Bentzi Gupstein, the chairman of LEHAVA, told Israeli site NRG that his group was upset about the wedding because of the recent war between Hamas and Israel.
“We are still at war and she is marrying a member of the enemy,” he said.
The anti-Arab organization Lehava, whose name is a Hebrew acronym for Preventing Assimilation in the Holy Land, has been disseminating the wedding invitation over social media in recent days, and calling on supporters to demonstrate at the banquet hall when the celebration takes place.
"On Sunday we will all be in Rishon! An abomination is taking place in Israel! We will not be silent, we will be there to protest. Come with placards and loudspeakers. In the name of God we will succeed! Share this with everyone! Sadly, this is really happening," read the statement on the Facebook page of Lehava, headed by Bentzi Gopstein.
Following the threats from Lehava, the couple has hired 14 security guards for the wedding celebration. Police also said they would send personnel to the area to prevent any disturbance.
Israel and Palestinians are in a war once again. The recent war that broke out between the two rivals July 08 following the mudrer of three Israeli teens has killed about 2000 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly civilians. About 64 Israeli soldiers have also been killed in the deadly battle.
