
Vengara (Kerala): Veteran Indian Union Muslim League leader KNA Khader on Sunday defeated PP Basheer of CPI (M) in the by election held in Vengara parliamentary constituency results of which were announced today afternoon.
IUML candidate Khader won the Vengara by polls by 23,310 votes. He got 65,227 votes.
CPI (M) candidate Basheer came second, SDPI third and NDA at fourth position.
A bye-election was necessitated in Vengara after sitting MLA PK Kunhalikutty of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) vacated the seat to contest a bypoll in Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency which he went on to win by over 1.7 lakh votes. E Ahamed, MP from Malappuram, died following a cardiac arrest during the joint address of the President to both Houses of Parliament earlier this year.
The Vengara by elections were held on October 11 along with Gurdaspur in Punjab.
Commenting on the election resu;t, leaders of the CPM, which has never tasted victory in Vengara since the constituency was formed post delimitation in 2008, privately confided that apart from improving their vote-share, they expected nothing more from the bye-election.
Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar has won the Gurdaspur Parliamentary by election defeatiing BJP's Swaran Salaria by over 1,90,000 votes, according to election official sources.
Sunil Jakhar mainted lead over his rivals ever since the first round of counting.
He was leading by 42,718 and 14,316 after the second and first round of countings in Gurdaspur byelection. After third round, his lead crossed by more than 94,000 of votes.
He was finally declared winner by more than 1,90,000 votes.
Jakhar bagged a total of 4,99,752 votes whereas the BJP candidate got 3,06,533 votes.
AAP's Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria was a distant third with 23,579 votes.

10:00 am Sunil Jakhar, Punjab Congress Chief who is contesting the Gurdaspur by-elections against BJP's Swaran Salaria and AAP's Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria, is leading by more than 14,000 votes, sources at the counting centre said.
Sources said after the first round of vote count, Sunil Jakhar, son of former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar, was leading his rivals by 14,300 votes.
The Gurdaspur by-election was necessitated by the death of actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna, a BJP MP.
A total of 11 candidates are in fray for the Furdaspur Lok Sabha seat the beelection for which was held on October 11, 2017 recording more than 56% polling. It was lower than 70.03% recorded in the 2014 general elections.
Counting of votes began at around 09:00 am today at two counting centres amid tight security. As per the Election Commission directive, all liquor shops in Gurdaspur would remain closed. No hotel, restaurant, liquor shop or any eating joint, even with a licence, would be allowed to serve or sell liquor today.
The Gurdaspur parliamentary seat has nine assembly segments — Bhoa, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Qadian, Fathegarh Churian, Dera Baba Nanak, Sujanpur and Batala. Counting centres have been set up at Sukhjindra College Gurdaspur for the six assembly constituencies and for the rest three constituencies of Pathankot district, it has been set up at the SD College in Pathankot.
