Jodhpur:
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was up for an awkward situation on Monday when 250 cops who were supposed to give him guard of honour went on mass leave with other police personnel following rumours that there is a plan to cut their salaries.

Rajnath Singh was in the state to inaugurate a regional training centre of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in Jodhpur on Monday.

As reported by local newspapers a message posted on WhatsApp saying a new order by the state government would reduce policemen's pay scale from the existing Rs 24,000 to Rs 19,000.

As the message spread on the social media site, policemen went on mass leave.

The state government denied it had taken any such decision, though a proposal in this regard was presented to the government.

"A proposal to the effect is with the cabinet, but no employee should believe in these rumors," Gulab Chand Kataria, home minister Rajasthan, said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director General of Police (DGP) issued a letter later in the evening to Inspector Generals (IGs) and district Superintendents of Police (SPs), asking them to speak to the protesting officers to dispel the rumour.
