
Ahmedabad: President of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Amit Shah on Monday appeared in a Session Court in Ahmedabad as a defence witness for former Gujarat minister and party leader Maya Kodnani, who is accused of leading a murderous mob in Naroda Gam riots case in 2002.
11 Muslims were killed at Naroda Gam, a suburb in Ahmedabad in the riots on Feb 28, 2002 which erupted after Karsevaks were killed in the train coming from Ayodhya.
Amit Shah told the court that on Feb 28 morning Maya Kodnani was present in the state assembly and then at a city hospital.
"Maya Kodnani was not present in Naroda Gam, she was inside the state assembly at 8.30 am...From 9:30 am to 9:45 am I was at the Civil Hospital and I met Maya Kodnani there," Amit Shah told the court as reported by NDTV.
Amit Shah had been asked by the court last week to appear in person or a lawyer should be present in the court on his behalf to substantiate Kodnani’s claims that she was not present at the spot where riots took place.
Kodnani, a gynecologist and was then a legislator. She is accused of inciting rioters.
Kodnani was arrested in 2009 while she was serving the state as Women and Child Development Minister. She is among 79 other accused facing trials in Naroda Gam riots case.
Maya Kodnani was also convicted in the Naroda Patiya riots case and sentenced to 28 years imprisonment. In Naroda Patiya riots, around 100 Muslims had lost their lives.
