New Delhi: The Congress party on Sunday announced that along with Amethi in Uttar Pradesh Rahul Gandhi will also contest the 2019 Parliamentary elections from Wayanad in Kerala.
The announcement has been received with celebrations and cheers by Congress workers, but has been slammed by the ruling Left in Kerala and has also invited taunts from the BJP.
"It will be a message of unity of the the north and the south," Congress sopkesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said while announcing the decision along with senior party leader A.K. Antony.
Congress feels that Rahul contesting from Kerala will boost the morale of party workers in the state and will also help in tackling the division and infighting party faces in the state leadership.
Mocking the Congress President, BJP Chief Amit Shah said he is escaping Amethi.
"Why has he escaped to Kerala? All of you know that this time Rahul Gandhi is done for in Amethi. So he is going to Kerala in a bid to win on the politics of polarisation", Amit Shah said while addressing a rally in Bijnor District of Uttar Pradesh.
Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Sunday too took a potshot at Rahul Gandhi for deciding to contest Wayanad seat in Kerala.
He said that the Congress chief is feeling "uncomfortable, insecure and helpless in Amethi", his Lok Sabha constituency for three terms in a row.
"Rahul Gandhi is feeling uncomfortable, insecure and helpless in Amethi. So he chose to contest Wayanad seat considering it as safe because of its ethnic profile," the senior BJP leader said.
Slammin the Congress President Prakash Karat, CPI(M) ex-General Secretary said, "Decision of Congress to field Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad shows their priority now is to fight against Left in Kerala."
"It goes against Congress’ national commitment to fight BJP, as in Kerala it’s LDF which is the main force fighting BJP there", he added.
Kerela Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan too criticised the Congress President.
"He’s fighting in one of the 20 constituencies(in Kerala) and doesn’t need to be seen as any different. We will fight him. He should have contested from a constituency where BJP is contesting, it’s nothing but a fight against Left", he said.
The Wayand constituency was formed in 2009 and consists of seven assembly segments spread over three districts - Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram. All the three districts have good population of Muslims.
In 2014, M I Shanavas of Congress had won the seat bagging 377,035 votes. He had defeated Sathyan Mokeri of CPI (M) who had received 356,165 votes. The seat is vacant now after Shanavas died six months ago.
Rahul Gandhi will face P P Suneer of CPI (M) in Wayanad and Smriti Irani of BJP in Amethi Lok Sabha seat.
