Mumbai/Lucknow: A number of students at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai and Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow staged marches late on Sunday and again on Monday to express solidarity with their counterparts at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University where students were brutally targeted by Delhi police.
The IIT-B and TISS students, including many girls, carried torches, banners and posters saying "In Solidarity With Jamia" and silently marched around their campuses peacefully.
Some IIT-B students posted on social media that they undertook the silent protest despite being refused permission by the IIT-B authorities.
TISS students, including many women, who also staged a candle-light march late on Sunday, said they plan to boycott their lectures on Monday to condemn the brutal violence against the students in Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University and the the Northeastern states.
The students of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow protested against the Delhi and Aligarh Police. As the police here closed the gates of the college from outside, students pelted stones at the policemen from inside.
After some time, stone pelting stopped and Lucknow SSP Kalanidhi Naithani claimed that students had returned to their classes.
"About 150 students had come out to protest but they are going back to their classes. The situation is now normal," he said.
Uttar Pradesh DGP O.P. Singh said that the law and order situation would be strictly implemented on the campus and those students who indulge in violence would be dealt with strictly. He appealed to the students to maintain peace.
The Allahabad University too was closed on Monday after students announced their decision to stage a protest on Monday afternoon.
The police have registered cases against 500 students of Aligarh Muslim University where clashes took place late on Sunday.
Sources said that about two dozen students of AMU have been detained for questioning. "We suspect that some outsiders were involved in the Sunday's violence in AMU," said a senior police official.
Last night's incidents in Jamia Millia and AMU have triggered hot debates among the students in different central universities across the country who are staging various forms of protests and many have slammed the violence.
Late on Sunday night, students from AIIMS, JNU, DU and other Delhi institutions had also joined protest against Delhi police and show solidarity with Jamia and AMU students. Solidarity marches were also held in Kannur, Kerala, Bhopal, MANUU Hyderabad and Jadavpur University Kolkata.
