New Zealand Terrorist Attack Accused

Christchurch (New Zealand): Brenton Harrison Tarrant, the 28-year-old key accused in terrorist attack at two New Zealand mosques during Friday prayers that killed 49 peacful worshipers and injured dozens was produced in court a day after the attacks.

Tarrant was handcuffed and barefoot, and was wearing a white prison suit. He did not speak but smirked at photographers during the hearing and was seen making the white power gesture, New Zealand Herald reported.

He was later sent to jail until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city's High Court on April 5.

Duty lawyer Richard Peters said no application for bail would be made. No application for name suppression was made.

However, while Judge Kellar granted in court photographs and filming, he ordered that his face be pixelated to preserve any fair trial rights.

As many as 49 Muslims were killed when Tarrant drove to Masjid Al Noor in Christchurch and opened fire at the peaceful worshipers who were busy offering weekly Friday prayers.

In a most horrific manner, Tarrant livestreamed the entire incident on Facebook with the help of a camera installed on the helmet he was wearing.

Labelling the attack as an act of terrorism, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the moment of the tragic incident as "darkest in the history of New Zealand". She also vowed to reform the country’s gun laws.

Tarrant has been identified as a suspected white supremacist, based on his social media activity. Along with livestreaming, he also posted a “manifesto” denouncing immigrants as “invaders” on Facebook.
