With 138 Covid-19 positive cases, Kerala now worst affected in India

Till today Maharashtra, which has reported 125 Coronavirus positive cases, was the worst affected state in India

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala reported 19 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases on the second day of nationwide lockdown Thursday.

With this total number of people tested positive for Coronaviurs spurred to 138 - the highest in any of the Indian states.

Till today Maharashtra, which has reported 125 Coronavirus positive cases, was the worst affected state in India. However, Kerala surpassed Maharashtra because of the 19 new corona positive cases it reported Thursday.

The new Covid-19 positive cases detected in Kerala today are 9 in Kannur, 3 each in Kasaragod and Malappuram, 2 in Thrissur, and 1 each in Idukki and Wayanad.

Maharashtra, which has reported 04 of the total 16 Coronavirus deaths in India, however still remained worst affected in terms of the casualties.

Reports citing Kerala Health Department officials said more than 120,000 people are under observation. Of them 601 are in different hospitals whereas the remaining 101,402 are isolated at their homes.

The first Coronavirus positive case in India was detected in Kerala about two months ago. Since then the situation has gone worst instead of improving despite the state taking all efforts in its hand to contain the crisis.

The Kerala cabinet in a meeting on Wednesday has also passed the Kerala Epidemics Diseases Ordinance, which will give more powers to the authorities to tackle Covid-19.

'Sanitizer takes life of an under trial'

Meanwhile, in a bizarre case of a suspected 'suicide', an under trial prisoner in Kerala's Palakkad jail on Thursday died after he was under treatment, of consuming sanitizer.

Speaking to IANS, an official in the know of things said the incident is true.

"Ramankutty was taken into custody by the police in a theft case on February 18 and was lodged in a jail near here. The incident took place on Monday and after that he was Amoved to a hospital. He passed away today," said the official who did not wish to be identified.

The jail inmates was engaged in the preparation of masks.

Meanwhile, the police has launched a probe to find out if it was a case of suicide or if he had consumed the sanitizer, as it had alcohol contents.
