149 cases in 24 hours, India Coronavirus count inches closer to 900

New Delhi: India's Coronavirus positive count is inching closer to 900 mark even as the country entered day 4 of the 21-day nationwide lockdown being observed to contain the impact of corona pandemic.

Latest reports coming from different state capitals said as many as 887 people have so far been found infected by the virus - which started from China's Wuhan and soon took into its grips over 100 countries, killing more than 27000 and making ill close to 600,000 peopl worlwide.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has early on the morning Saturday said there are at least 748 active COVID-19 cases in India at present, taking the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country to 834.

Maharashtra worst affected in India

Besides 748 active cases, the country has reported 19 casualties so far while 66 persons have recovered.

The disease has so far spread to 27 states and UTs. A total of 103 districts have been affected by the highly contagious virus.

Maharashtra continues to be worst affected state with a total of infection of 156 - inlcuding 12 members of a single family in Sangli and 03 doctors in Mumbai.

Besides Mumbai and Sangli, new Coronavirus positive cases were also reported from Pune, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Gondia.

India Friday reported 149 new Coronavirus cases in 24-hours with reports of Covid-19 infections coming from a number of states including Kerala, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi and also from Chandigarh.

Among the infected are also a doctor couple in Hyderabad Telangana who did not have any travel history.

New ventilators ordered

On Friday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that it has given orders to Public Sector Undertakings to provide ventilators in order to handle the surge in novel coronavirus cases in the country.

"The government is taking preemptive and proactive approach to tackle the situation in order to upgrade the number of ventilators in the country", Joint Health Secretary of the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal said.

"We have given an order to PSU to provide 10,000 ventilators. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which is one of the Defence Ministry's PSUs, has also been requested to purchase 30,000 additional ventilators in 1-2 months", he added.

Agarwal said at least 1.4 lakh companies have allowed their employees to work from home as per government's request. "Around 1.4 lakh companies allowed employees allowed work from home after our appeal of social distancing and lockdown", he said.
