Mumbai: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar on Saturday was forced to delete his tweet tagged with a photo of him sitting in his plush home and watching 'Ramayan' on television.
Javdekar deleted his "Ramayan watching" tweet after #आलसी_जावड़ेकर (Lazy Javdekar) started trending on Twitter with a number of social media users reminding the minister of the plight of thousands of migrant workers and labourers walking to their home state because of the Coronavirus lockdown.
Some social media users also shared the edited photograph of the Union Minister watching TV which originally had 'Ramayan' on the TV screen.
The edited photo showed on the TV screen of the minister the images of migrant workers and labourers walking to their home states to escape the burden of 21-day Corona virus lockdown announced by PM Narendra Modi.
Some social media users also tagged the minister the photographs of migrant workers and Indians stranded abroad after the Coronavirus outbreak, cheering while sitting inside an aeroplane arranged by the government to bring them back to India.
"Sab yaad rekha jayega (the country will never forgive this)", a Twitter user wrote.
"Sir country need more test, more Kit, more Protective suit and mask, what will your Govt. do now? @PrakashJavdekar - We will watch Ramayan and post pic on twitter", another user wrote sarcastically.
Devoid of money to buy food, thousands of labourers working in various states of India walked, some travelled in containers, to escape the brunt of lockdown announced by the government to contain the spread of Coronavirus.
Opposition parties while agreeing that the lockdown was necessary, said the move was announced without any proper planning.
"How can we as a nation just leave thousands of migrant workers to fend for themselves? There are men, women and children who are walking as far as Eastern UP and Bihar", senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said.
"We sent planes to bring citizens from Europe, why aren’t we organising transport to take the poorest and most vulnerable amongst us home?" she said.
"It is the governments moral duty to help our fellow citizens in this time of crisis. For God’s sake, @Modi ji @AmitShah ji ... please use the power you have been given to save their lives", she added.
