Urdu Kitab Mela is back, this time in Mumbai at much bigger scale

Mumbai: The Urdu Book Fair, popularly known as Urdu Kitab Mela, organised every year by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), is back with its 26th Edition all set for a grand inauguration on Saturday January 06, 2024 in Mumbai on a much bigger venue.

Preparations for the 26th All India Urdu Kitab Mela to be held on R2 Ground, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai from January 06 to 14, 2024 are in the final stage, the NCPUL said.

“The Mumbai City is hosting the Urdu Kitab Mela for the 4th time. But, special arrangement is made and all efforts are taken to make this year’s book mela a historic event”, Ajmal Saeed, the Office-Incharge of the NCPUL who looks after the organisation of the Kitab Mela said.

In Mumbai, Anjuman Islam is co-ordinating with the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) to make the 2024 Urdu Kitab Mela a grand success. Anjuman-I-Islam, Mumbai was founded in the year 1874 by a small group of Muslims led by Dr. Badruddin Tyabji - third President of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the first Acting Indian Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

Anjuman’s current President is Dr Zahir Kazi. Under his leadership, the Anjuman had hosted the Urdu Kitab Mela in 2009 and 2012 – both the times at Saboo Siddique Polytechnic Ground in Byculla, Mumbai.

“The Anjuman hosted the Urdu Kitab Mela in the past at the Saboo Siddique Polytechnic Ground. But, our effort is to organise this year’s Urdu book fair at such a large scale that its resonance is felt globally”, he said.

The Urdu Kitab Mela in Mumbai will be inaugurated by Sahitya Akademi Secretary Dr. K. Sreenivasarao at 10:30 on Saturday January 06, 2024.

Giving more details about the annual event, Ajmal Saeed said there will be a total of 185 book stalls showcasing more than 150,000 books on a variety of subjects.

“Arrangements have also been made to bring in more books on urgent basis if needed”, Ajmal Saeed said.

“To make the event memorable for the visitors, all publishers have been mandated to give at least 10 per cent discount”, he added.

Ajmal Saeed also said that the NCPUL has planned to organise 31 cultural events during the 9-day Urdu Kitab Mela.

These cultural events will be held in coordination with Anjuman Islam, and other cultural and social groups Gul Bootey, Urdu Karwan, Urdu Headmasters’ Association (AIITA), Pasban e Adab, Awami Idara, Urdu Gagan, Quiz Time, Kaawish Mumbai and others.

A local commits comprising of Imtiyaz Khaleel, Farooq Syed, Farid Khan, AamirAnsari, Humayun Kabir, Imran Amin, Qasim Imam and Siddharth Shandilya has also been constituted to coordinate with the NCPUL and Anjuman Islam for the success of the 2024 Urdu Kitab Mela.

The NCPUL had organised the 25th Edition of the Urdu Kitab Mela in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu in January 2023 whereas the 24th Edition of the Urdu Book Fair was held in Malegaon in December 2021.

Mumbai and Malegaon are the two cities where the NCPUL Urdu Kitab Mela has been held more than once. Malegaon had hosted the Kitab Mela in 2014 as well.
