Washington: The Mediterranean diet has retained the top spot in the U.S. News and World Report 2024 rankings of Best Diets released Wednesday, January 03, 2024.
"For the seventh consecutive year, the Mediterranean diet takes the No. 1 spot for the Best Diets Overall, with its focus on diet quality rather than a single nutrient or food group and a daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, olive oil, herbs and spices", the U.S. News and World Report said.
U.S. News & World Report is the global authority in health rankings and consumer advice. It revealed the 2024 rankings of its annual evaluation of Best Diets partnering with The Harris Poll.
The ranking is based on the Best Diets methodology — and including input from a panel of leading health experts. The ranking result was released after examine 30 diets, with six additional diets evaluated since last year's Best Diets rankings, the U.S. News and World Report said.
"The Mediterranean diet also claimed the top spot in Best Diets for Diabetes, Best Heart-Healthy Diets, Easiest Diets to Follow, Best Diets for Bone and Joint Health, Best Family-Friendly Diets and Best Diets for Healthy Eating", the U.S. News and World Report said.
Basically based on plant foods, Mediterranean diet is built around vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, beans and whole grains. Moderate amounts of dairy, poultry and eggs are also part of the Mediterranean diet, as is seafood, but red meat is eaten only once in a while.
The U.S. News & World Report in 2024 rankings of the best diest has placed DASH diet on the 2nd spot while 3rd best in the world as per the global authority in health rankings is MIND diet.
"DASH diet — known for fighting high blood pressure, receives praise for its nutritional completeness, safety, ability to prevent or control diabetes and supporting heart health — comes in at No. 2 for Best Diet Overall this year. The No. 3 Best Overall diet is the MIND diet, which takes two proven diets, DASH and Mediterranean, with added focus on foods that improve brain health", the ranking authority said.
The DASH diet is also more or less same as Mediterranean diet and focuses on vegetables, fruits and whole grains. But, it includes fat-free or low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry, beans and nuts. The diet limits foods that are high in salt i.e. sodium. DASH diet also limits added sugar and saturated fat, such as in fatty meats and full-fat dairy products.
MIND diet includes fish, poultry, beans, and nuts, limited use of red meat and cheese. A variety of whole grains - like whole-wheat bread, whole-grain pasta, and brown rice, are also part of MIND diet. It avoida bacon, cold cuts, and other processed meats.
The US News & World Report in its 2024 rankings also released top three Best Weight-Loss Diets, Best Fast Weight-Loss Diets, Best Diabetes Diets, Best Diets for Bone and Joint Health, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, Best Diet Programs, Best Family-Friendly Diets, Best Heart-Healthy Diets, Best Plant-Based Diets and Easiest Diets to Follow.
The top three diets - Mediterranean, DASH diet and MIND diet, have been included in most of the categories. But, other popular diets included in the rank list are Vegan diet, Flexitarian diet, Ornish diet, Weight Watchers (WW) diet, Mayo Clinic diet, Noom diet, Keto diet, Atkins diet, HMR Program and Volumetrics diet.
