Mumbai: Trucks, buses, taxis and other transport vehicles were off the roads and fuel stations have announced shutdown as the transporters began their three-day strike against the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Monday January 01, 2024.

The transporters are especially angry over the new provision in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to road accidents and hit-and-run cases.

As per the new provision in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, vehicle drivers are mandated to stop and help the victims in case of an accident. Failing this there will be a fine Rs 7 lakh and 10-year jail term.

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has given a call for the nation-wide strike to protest against the controversial provision in the new law, which is yet to come into force.

As oil tanker drivers are also on strike, fuel stations, and petrol and diesel pumps have announced to down their shutters due to shortage from tonight.

Long queues were seen outside petrol pumps in many cities of the country. Reports of hike in vegetable prices are also coming from different states.

Drivers leaving their jobs and abandoing vehicles in transit. Sporadic protests across the country even before the three-day nationwide strike that began today, according to All India Motor Transport Congress.

President of All J&K Petrol Tankers Owners’ Association and J&K Fuel Station Owners’ Association, Anan Sharma, said that Rs. 7 lakh penalty and 10 years imprisonment proposed in the hit and run case was too harsh for the drivers.

“The oil tanker drivers say if they had Rs. 7 lakh with them, they would have bought their own vehicles and not remained drivers,” said Anan Sharma, according to Hindustan Times.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government's Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department on Monday requested police to ensure smooth and uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in the market, according to PTI.
