Liberian cargo ship with 15 Indians onboard hijacked in Arabian Sea

Mumbai: A Liberian cargo ship with at least 15 Indian crew members onboard, has been hijacked by around five-six armed hijackers near the coast of Somalia in the Arabian Sea Friday January 05, 2024.

"Cargo Ship With 15 Indians Hijacked Off Somalia. The hijacked ship has 15 Indians on board and communication has been established with the crew", All India Seafarers Union said in a social media post.

The hijacked ship, ‘MV Lila Norfolk’, had sent an SOS on UKMTP portal informing that the armed hijackers boarded the ship late Thursday evening, according to media reports.

Responding to the concerning situation, the Indian Navy launched an MPA and has diverted INS Chennai deployed for Maritime Security Operations to assist the vessel.

The naval aircraft continue to monitor the movement of the ship as the INS Chennai approaches the vessel, and the overall situation is being closely tracked in coordination with other agencies/MNF in the region, according to news agency IANS.

Military officials confirmed the hijacking and established communication with the crew members on board.

"The hijacked vessel is under constant surveillance by Indian Navy aircraft.", the officials said.

This is the third incident of its kind in the high seas on the country's west coast in the past one month or with the Indian Navy rising to the occasion with a rescue and relief operation.
