Sirsa (Haryana): Some 500 girl students of Chaudhary Devi Lal University in Haryana’s Sirsa in a letter sent to PM Modi and State Chief Minister ML Khattar have accused a preofessor of sexual assault.

In the letter, the female students accused the professor of using "filthy and obscene acts". The students alleged that the professor "calls girls to his office, takes them to a bathroom, and "touches private parts, and (does) obscene things with us", according to NDTV.

The copies of the letter have also been sent to Vice Chancellor Dr Ajmer Singh Malik, Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij, and National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma, along with senior state government officials and some media organisations.

The female students have not disclosed their identities.

"We can't write out names and contact numbers as it will malign our own image if no action is taken by the professor. The dignity of our family will be at stake. He has political influence and has threatened to get us expelled if we speak against him," the letter said.

The students alleged that the Vice Chancellor, instead of taking any action, threatened to expel them because the professor is a “person of immense political influence”, as reported by The Times of India.

The students alleged that the matter is going on since months, and the Vice Chancellor - instead of taking action against the professor, is promising the girls better marks in examinations if they ignore his staff’s misconduct.

The students also alleged that the professor has destroyed the available evidences against him, including CCTV recordings.

As per the reports, the accused professor has faced similar allegations at least two times in the past. The matter went to the university’s internal complaints committee which "cleared" him both the times.

The university Registrar, Dr Rajesh Kumar Bansal, confirmed receipt of the anonymous letter. He also promised "action against the guilty" but said, "if someone is innocent then their character should not be assassinated."

The accused professor, meanwhile, rejected the students' allegations, terming them politically motivated.
