Dhaka: Sheikh Hasina Monday January 08, 2024 won the Bangladesh National Elections for a record four consecutive terms and is set to become Prime Minister of the South Asian country for 5th term, another record.
Sheikh Hasina led Awami League won the Bangladesh Parliamentary elections polling for which was held Sunday January 07, 2024 amid boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other opposition parties.
The ruling Awami League won 223 of the total 298 seats in the 12th Parliamentary Elections of Bangladesh.
Jatiya Party (Ershad) won 11 seats whereas the remaining seats went to other smaller parties.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former PM Khaleda Zia, who is currently in jail, did not participate in the general elections.
Monday’s election victory also meant Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to retain her title as the world’s longest-serving female head of government.
The opposition boycotted elections alleging rigging and manipulation. The BNP demanded Sheikh Hasina to step down in order to conduct a free and fair elections in the country.
Sheikh Hasina however refused. After the final results were announced Monday, Sheikh Hasina on Monday claimed all measures had been taken to hold free, fair, and impartial elections.
“Bangladesh has successfully set an example by holding Sunday's general election”, she said.
“You have come and witnessed how the people vote in our country. We have set a precedent that the election can be free, fair, and neutral”, she said while talking with the local and foreign journalists and election observers.
According to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, voter turns out in the 2024 elections in Bangladesh was just 40%, and only 120 of the total 170 million registered voters casted their votes. This is the second lowest voter turnout since the reinstatement of democracy in 1991.
Sheikh Hasina, daughter of founding father and first president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, became Prime Minister for the first time in 1996 and 2001 general elections. She however won the 2009 elections and remained Prime Minister of Bangladesh since then.
