New Delhi: The Congress Party declined the invitation to attend the inauguration ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya sent to party leaders.
In a statement released by its General Secretary and Spokesperson Jairam Ramesh Wednesday January 10, 2024, the Congress said the “temple in Ayodhya is a political project of the BJP and RSS”.
The party also said that the inauguration of the ”incomplete” Mandir on January 22, 2024 is done for elections and political mileage.
"Religion is a personal matter. But the RSS/BJP have long made a political project of the temple in Ayodhya. The inauguration of the incomplete temple by the leaders of the BJP and the RSS has been obviously brought forward for electoral gain," Jairam Ramesh said in the statement released today.
The Congress also said the opening ceremony is a “BJP and RSS event”.
"While abiding by the 2019 Supreme Court judgment and honouring the sentiments of millions who revere Lord Ram, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have respectfully declined the invitation to what is clearly an RSS/BJP event," he added.
Ram Mandir is under construction on the site in Ayodhya where Babri Masjid stood since 1528. The 16th century historic Babri Masjid was built by Mir Baqi, a commander of the Mughal Emperor Babur.
The mosque was however drawn into a controversy after claims were made that the site is actually the birthplace of Hindu Lord Ram and it was built after demolishing a Hindu Mandir.
Following years of violent campaign, Babri Masjid was finally demolished by right-wing Hindu extremists on December 06, 1992 in the presence of top BJP, RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders.
Later, the Supreme Court of India in an order passed on November 09, 2019 granted the ownership of the land to Hindus and asked the government to form a trust to build Ram Mandir on the Babri Masjid site.
The Mandir is still incomplete. But the government has decided to open it for worshippers January 22, 2024 onwards. The inauguration ceremony is being held few months before the 2024 General Elections.
Meanwhile, top Hindu saints are also opposing the opening of the incomplete Ram Mandir.
