Mumbai: The online campaign endorsing the South Africa petition at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) seeking to hold Israel accountable for the massacre and genocide of Palestinians in Gaza has become one of the most signed on change.org.
South Africa filed its petition at the International Court of Justice on December 29, 2023 accusing Israel of violating the “Genocide Convention”.
The ICJ accepted the South Africa petition and confirmed it will hold a public hearing on it Thursday January 11 and Friday 12, 2024.
Besides the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) - the 57-member bloc represnting Muslim countries, the Arab League, which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and other Arab states, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, The Maldives, Namibia and Pakistan have officially extended their support for the South Africa petition.
As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) prepares itself for the hearing on the South Africa petition at The Hague Thursday at 11:00 am, people are thronging to change.org to endorse online campaign in support.
The change.org petition started about ten days ago, has so far been signed by more than 355,000 at the time of filing this story and this number is growing with every passing second.
Riyad Tibi, who is based in the United Kingdom, started the online petition titled “Why this petition matters” on the online platform to endorse and support the SA petition at ICJ.
"We the undersigned applaud and fully support South Africa’s referral of Israel to the ICJ (International Court of Justice) for its genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza", Riyad Tibi wrote in the petition.
"We hope that this action will lead to some form of international action that will put an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza, and also lead to achieving justice after two months of incessant war crimes by Israel which have led to 21,000 deaths so far", he wrote.
Riyad Tibi further said that South Africa in its application at ICJ described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group”.
The acts in question include “killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction", South Africa said in its plea at ICJ.
The petition on change.org is now receiving a huge online support. As many as 355,144 internet users have signed Riyad Tibi’s petition – around 200,000 of them signing in the last two days, at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Occupation Forces have continued their brutal military offensive targeting civilians in Gaza Strip, and also the Occupied Palestine, killing to 23,357 Palestinians – more than 70 per cent of them women and children, as on January 10, 2024.
More than 8,000 others are either missing or trapped under the debris.
