Doomsday Day Clock update for 2024 today – When and Where to watch

[Representation.]

Mumbai: The scientists are set to update today i.e. Tuesday January 23, 2024 the Doomsday Clock for 2024 with experts predicting it may move closer to midnight based on the intensifying geopolitical and environmental challenges.

Currently set at 90 seconds to midnight since last year, the Doomsday Clock is updated every year.

Since its launch in 1947 by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, the Doomsday Clock has warned humanity how close the world is to catastrophe every year, with the midnight acting as a symbol for the apocalypse.

Doomsday Clock update today

The Doomsday Clock symbolises the world's proximity to a human-made global catastrophe.

The annual update reflects whether the risks of such a catastrophe have increased or decreased. The closer to midnight, the higher the perceived risk of self-destruction.

The scientists will set the Doomsday Clock time for 2024 at 10:00 am EST which is 08:30 PM today i.e. Tuesday January 23, 2024.

The Doomsday update event will be broadcasted live on "thebulletin.org".

The Doomsday Clock update today comes at a time when the world is facing more serious challenges as compared to last year including Israeli war on Palestinians, the ongoing Russia Ukraine war, and with the climate disasters wreaking havoc.

About Doomsday Clock

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project. The Doomsday Clock was created two years later.

The Doomsday Clock uses the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet.

The Doomsday Clock is set every year by the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board in consultation with its Board of Sponsors, which includes 10 Nobel laureates. The Clock has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to global catastrophe caused by manmade technologies, according to the bulletin.

In 2023, the clock was set at 90 seconds, the closest ever, citing unprecedented danger due to the war in Ukraine and nuclear threats. Conversely, in 1991, following the end of the Cold War, the hands were set at 17 minutes to midnight as a result of reduced nuclear threats.
