Wimbledon 2024 Women Final: Barbora Krejcikova 4th Czech player to lift trophy

Wimbledon 2024: Barbora Krejcikova Saturday defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini in 3-set thriller to win the Wimbledon 2024 Women's Singles Final 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Barbora Krejčíková won her second grand slam and first Wimbledon title Saturday, also becoming only 4th Czech player to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish in the Open Era after her one-time mentor Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova and last year’s champion Marketa Vondrousova.

Though she initially raced to a one set lead, Krejčíková had to call on all her experience as a 7-time grand slam doubles champion and 2021 French Open champion in the face of Paolini’s spirited fightback, according to CNN.

The Italian, playing in her 2nd consecutive Grand Slam Final, dragged the match to a deciding set and fended off two championship points before Krejčíková sealed victory at her third attempt, sparking emotional celebrations.

In keeping with Wimbledon tradition, Krejcikova clambered up to the players' box to celebrate with her team and family, many of whom were in tears.

"I don't have any words right now - it's just unbelievable, it's definitely the best day of my tennis career and also the best day of my life," she added.

As the magnitude of her achievement sank in, Krejcikova, trophy in hand, burst into tears as she left Centre Court, BBC reported.

The result is a second straight Grand Slam final defeat for Paolini, who fell to Iga Swiatek in straight sets in last month's French Open showpiece.

The 28-year-old was bidding to become Italy's first women's singles champion at Wimbledon.

On Sunday, Serbian Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of last year’s epic Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz, 21, had last year defeated Djokovic, 37, in a 5-set thriller to win Wimbledon for the first time and looks the favorite to retain his title. But Djokovic is bidding to make history and win Wimbledon for an eighth time to tie Roger Federer’s men’s record, as well as a 25th grand slam.
