New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi will retain Raebareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and vacate Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency in Kerala for his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress party announced Monday.
Rahul Gandhi had contested the 2024 Parliamentary Elections from two seats – Raebareli in North and Wayanad in South. He won both the seats but as per the rule can retain only one.
“The Congress Party feels it would be good if Rahul Gandhi retains the Raebareli seat as the constituency has a very special bond with the Congress and Gandhi family”, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced.
“It’s a painful decision for Rahul and the Congress Party to vacate the Wayanad seat as the people in the constituency had showered their love for him. But, in order not to let down the people there, the Congress has decided to field Priyanka Gandhi from Wayanad”, he said.
In the first statement after the Congress Party’s announcement, Priyanka Gandhi said she would be happy to represent Wayanad and won’t let the people feel absence of Rahul Gandhi.
“I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad. I won't let the people of Wayanad feel Rahul ji's absence. I will try my best to be a good representative”, she said.
As Priyanka talked with the press, Rahul Gandhi intervened and said Priyanka and he both will work together for the development of Raebareli and Wayanad.
“Raebareli and Wayanad will have two MPs working for them”, he quipped.
