Occupied Jerusalem: Muslim worshippers on their way to Masjid Al Aqsa to offer Taraweeh prayers on the first day of Ramadan 2024 were baton charged and blocked from entering the Holy Site by the Israeli Occupation Forces.

The far right Zionist regime in Israel had earlier vowed to stop prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque in the Occupied Jerusalem during the month of Ramadan if the Israeli hostages are not released.

In response, the Palestinian Resistance Groups said they are ready to free all hostages in exchange of Palestinians languishing in Israeli jails and end of its 76-year-long occupation and immediate ceasefire.

According to the Israeli state broadcaster KAN, the Zionist regime had also allowed extremist Jews to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque during the month of Ramadan.

Nonetheless, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu a week before Ramadan toned down his government’s decision to block Taraweeh and other prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque during the Month of Ramadan after a massive outrage.

“We will do everything to maintain the freedom of worship on the Temple Mount [Al-Aqsa], while appropriately maintaining security and safety needs, and we will allow the Muslim public to celebrate the holiday,” Netanyahu said ahead of Ramadan as quoted by The Times of Israel.

The scene at Al Aqsa on Sunday was totally different to what Netanyahu had promised. The Israeli forces baton charged the Muslims who were on their way to Al Aqsa Mosque to offer Taraweeh – Special Night Prayers, offered during Ramadan.

Eyewitnesses said that many Palestinians who came to perform Tarawih had gathered at the gate of the Noble Sanctuary, or Haram al-Sharif when they were met with aggressive Israeli forces, according to Anadolu Agency.

Later, the Israeli forces allowed only women and elderly to enter the mosque premises. The Muslims, who were blocked from entering the Al Aqsa Mosque, prayed outside in the streets of the Old City.

Al Aqsa Mosque is the world's third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the Temple Mount, saying it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

Images that emerged after the first night of Ramadan at Al Aqsa and shared by news agency Reuters showed fewer number of worshipers praying in the compound because of the blockade and access restrictions imposed by the Israeli police.
