New Delhi: The Congress Party Tuesday released its second list of 43 candidates for the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.

Besides others, the Congress has confirmed the names of two Muslims – Rakibul Hussain and Rashid Choudhury, as the party candidates for the 2024 General Elections.

Rakibul Hussain

Rakibul Hussain has been fielded from the Dhubri Lok Sabha Constituency in Assam. Dhubri Parliamentary Constituency is dominated by Muslims and is represented by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Chief Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi.

Dhubri used to be a Congress stronghold. But Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi has won from here in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

Dhubri Lok Sabha Constituency is comprised of 11 Assembly segments – 05 in Dhubri district, 02 in Goalpara, 02 in Barpeta and 01 each in South Salmara Mankachar and Bongaigan.

Rakibul Hussain is the sitting Congress MLA from the Samaguri Assembly Constituency since 2001. He is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly since 2021.

He also served as a Minister in the erstwhile Congress governments holding various portfolios.

Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury

Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury has been fielded from the Karimganj Lok Sabha Seat in Assam. One of the 14 Parliamentary seats in Assam, Karimganj comprises of 06 Assembly segments of Assam – 04 in Karimganj district and 02 in Hailaknadi district of Assam.

Karimganj is another Congress bastion that went to AIUDF. The party however lost the seat to the BJP in the 2019 General Elections.

One of the renowned advocates of Assam Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury joined Congress two months ago. He had contested the 2006 Assam assembly election from the Karimganj North seat in 2006.

Other names finalised by the Congress in its second list are Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat (Assam), Nakul Nath s/o Kamal Nath Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh), Sanjana Jatav Bharatpur (Rajasthan) and Pradeep Tamta Almora (Uttarakhand).

The Congress had on March 08, 2024 released its first list of 39 candidates. The first list had the names of two Muslims - Shafi Parambil and Mohammad Hamdullah Sayeed.
