Stampede at RCB IPL celebrations, 11 killed

Bengaluru: As many as 11 cricket fans were killed and 47 others were left injured in stampede at the Karnataka government's felicitation of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for their IPL 2025 win Wednesday June 04, 2025.

The incident occurred as thousands of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the state capital, Bengaluru to celebrate RCB victory in the world’s most popular Twenty20 cricket tournament Tuesday.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah while expressing grief over the incident blamed overcrowding.

"The stadium capacity is of 35,000. And, over 2 to 3 lakh people turned up for the event", he said.

Talking to reporters Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said that “the crowd was very uncontrollable”.

What caused the stampede?

According to preliminary investigation, a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium collapsed under the weight of people standing on it. The collapse caused panic and a stampede, sources said.

Karnataka State Cricket Association had organized the felicitation program to celebrate the RCB victory over Punjab Kings.

Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru had earned their first Indian Premier League title by beating Punjab Kings by six runs.

RCB had finished runners-up in 2009, 2011 and 2016. The team finally won the final held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
