Priyanka Gandhi, Senior Congress Leader and Wayanad MP, Saturday slammed the Narendra Modi government for abstaining from voting on a UN General Assembly motion on Gaza.
The UN General Assembly on June 12, 2025 overwhelmingly adopted the resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
The resolution was backed by 149 Member States, with 12 voting against and 19 abstaining. Sadly, India was 1 among the 19 UN members abstaining from voting.
“It is shameful and disappointing that our government has chosen to abstain on the UN motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza”, Gandhi wrote on social media platform X.
Priyanka Gandhi reminded the Modi government about the plight of Palestinians in Gaza saying 60,000 people, majority of them women and children, have been killed and the entire population is left to starve, “… and we are refusing to take a stand”, she wrote.
Priyanka Gandhi also questioned the celebrations back home after Israel attacked, unprovoked, Iran and killed a number of people including IRGC Commanders and Nuclear Scientists.
“This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. In fact, not only are we standing silent as Mr Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms”, she wrote.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also questioned how India can “abandon” the principles of the Constitution, and the values of the freedom struggle “that led the way for an international arena based on peace and humanity.”

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Thursday passed the resolution - with 149 in support, after the UN Security Council (UNSC) failed to pass a similar due to veto by the United States.
Besides India, Georgia, Ecuador, Romania and Ethiopia were the countries that abstained from voting.
Among those opposing the resolution were the United States and Israel, who were joined among others by Argentina, Hungary and Paraguay.
Brought forward by over 20 countries, the resolution condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war, demands a full lifting of the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid, and insists on the protection of civilians under international law.
