Ahmedabad: London bound Air India plane, Boeing AI 171, with 242 people onboard crashed on a residential area minutes after it took off from the Ahmedabad Airport Thursday.
Horrific visuals are emerging from the crashed site where fire fighters and other civic personnel are engaged in rescue operation.
Of the total 242, who were onboard the plane, 241 have been killed in the crash, local police officials said.
Among them is also senior BJP leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, the party leaders have confirmed.
The Police had earlier said all the 242 onboard the plane were killed. Hours later the officials said they found one survivor.
"The police found one survivor in seat 11A," Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
It is also reported that at least 5 medical students of the Ahmedbad medical college (BJ Medical College) have also been killed. The AI 171 had crashed on the hostel building.
The AI 171 flight, a Boeing 787 aircraft also known as the Dreamliner, was scheduled to take off from Ahmedabad Airport at 01:55 PM Thursday June 12, 2025. It, however, took off at 01:38 PM. Barely five minutes in the air, the flight crashed on doctor’s hostel in the Ahmedabad medical college premises.
In a social media post on X, Air India gave details of the passengers onboard the plane.
“Of the total 242 onboard, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals,” Air India said.

London’s Gatwick Airport in a statement confirmed that the plane that crashed near Ahmedabad was due to land at the airport at 06:25 PM local time.
Visuals circulating in social media showed smoke billowing from the crash site barely meters away from the Ahmedabad Airport.
Reports have now emerged that the pilots had made a mayday call to the control room moments before the crash.
According to the reports, many people in the Ahmedabad Medical College premises and nearby areas have also been injured in the crash.
The injured have been rushed to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and other hospitals. The hospital’s trauma centre reported severely burnt bodies coming in, many of which were beyond identification.
A shocking image taken from the crash site showed the tail (rear-end) of the fuselage had crashed on the top floor of the resident doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College Civil Hospital in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad.
Junior doctors and MBBS students were having lunch when the plane suddenly crashed into their building.
The plane crash Thursday took place when around 200 people were residing in Atulyam building’s 94 flats, CISF sources said.
